Usually not. Bahrain Customs lets people who are moving their home to Bahrain bring in their used personal and household belongings without duty, as long as the conditions are met.
Conditions
- You are actually changing your place of residence to Bahrain.
- The goods belong to you and have been used.
- They arrive within 6 months of your arrival in Bahrain.
Papers for the clearance
- A copy of your passport showing your work permit, entry and residence visa.
- If your work permit is still being processed, a letter from your employer.
What is not covered: tobacco, and vehicles of any kind. These must be declared through your clearing agent and may be taxed.
Questions: Bahrain Customs on 17389999 or customerservice@customs.gov.bh.
The catch: the 6-month window runs from the day you arrive, not the day your residence is approved. Book the shipment early, and keep new items (still boxed, with receipts) out of the "used goods" list.
Steps
- Arrange your shipment so it lands within 6 months of your arrival.
- Give your clearing agent a passport copy with your visa and work permit, or an employer letter.
- Declare any tobacco or vehicles separately.
- Clear the shipment through customs.
