Before you can train with a driving instructor you need a learner's licence, issued by the General Directorate of Traffic (GDT). It is valid for one year.
Who can get one (private car or motorcycle)
- You must be at least 18.
- Any fines, violations and accident cases in your name must be settled, and no legal restriction on your personal number.
- Foreigners need a valid residence permit.
- You must pass the vision test.
What to bring: your valid ID card.
Cost: the National Portal lists from 15 BHD to 47, depending on the licence category. Pay by debit card, credit card or cash at a TAM kiosk.
How
- Online: on the eGovernment portal, open Driving School Services, log in with your eKey and choose "Request for Issuing Learner's License".
- In person: book on the Mawaeid app and go to GDT's driver licensing division or an outside service centre. Processing is one working day.
Finding an instructor: once you have the learner's licence you choose an instructor from GDT's list, and the instructor contacts you to set your training times.
The catch: the vision test comes first and must be passed before the licence is issued. Professional categories (public transport, driving instructor) have extra conditions such as age limits and 5 years of driving experience.
Steps
- Settle any fines and make sure your residence permit is valid.
- Apply via eKey (Driving School Services) or book on Mawaeid.
- Pass the vision test and pay the fee.
- Choose a driving instructor from GDT's list.
