How do I open an EWA electricity and water account as a tenant in Bahrain?

As soon as you rent, put the electricity and water account in your own name with the Electricity & Water Authority (EWA). EWA can bill from the start date of your lease, so a late application can bring backdated bills.

What you need: your ID card (a passport copy if you are not a resident), the owner's ID card, a copy of the lease and its registration receipt, and an official IBAN document or a credit card for direct deduction. A recent photo of the meters is optional. The account management agreement is only needed if you do not apply online.

Cost and time: the service itself has no fee, but tenants pay a security deposit unless the owner guarantees the account. EWA lists 2 working days.

The account only goes live once the direct deduction plan from your bank or card is set up, so do that straight away.

When you move out, ask EWA to close the account. You can reclaim the deposit, or what is left of it, by bank transfer after the final bill, minus anything owed on your other EWA accounts.

Steps

  1. Register your lease contract first and keep the receipt.
  2. Apply through an EWA service channel with your ID, the owner's ID, the lease and its receipt.
  3. Set up direct deduction from your bank account (IBAN) or credit card.
  4. Pay the security deposit through an EWA payment channel.
  5. When you leave, close the account and claim the deposit back after the final bill.
