The transfer is done by the General Directorate of Traffic (GDT). Seller and buyer normally go together.
Before you go
- The registration must still be valid.
- The buyer needs third-party (civil liability) insurance in their own name covering the rest of the registration period.
- No block on the car: if there is still a loan, bring a clearance letter from the lender.
- All traffic fines and accident claims on the car must be paid.
What to bring: valid ID cards for both, the vehicle ownership certificate and the licensing form signed by the owner. A company also needs its CR copy, the stamped form and a signed, stamped letter from its authorised signatory.
At the counter: both sign Form No. 1 in front of the traffic officer. If one is absent, signatures can be matched against records or the ID, but GDT can refuse if it is not satisfied.
Fee: 16 BHD (6 BHD plus 10 BHD for the ownership certificate), by debit card, credit card or cash at a TAM kiosk. Time: 1 working day.
Where: book on the Mawaeid app, then go to GDT's main branch in West Riffa or a service centre such as Wadi AlSail Mall.
The catch: until the transfer is done, the car and any fines stay in the seller's name. Do not hand over the car before completing it.
