Bahrain no longer issues a separate disability card. Instead, the chip in the national ID card carries the holder's disability status and type, and government and private bodies use it to give discounts and services.
Who qualifies: people already approved for the disability allowance from the Ministry of Social Development (MOSD).
How to get it
- Apply for a new ID card with the Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA).
- Attach your medical documents and proof that you receive the MOSD disability allowance.
- iGA ID centres include Isa Town (Building 1088, Road 4025, Block 840) and Seef Mall Muharraq.
Services MOSD provides free of charge
- A monthly disability allowance based on the type and degree of disability.
- Physiotherapy, vocational and academic rehabilitation, daycare and assistive devices.
- Registration, reclassification and allowance statements can be handled through the eGovernment portal.
Workers with a disability, and workers caring for a person with a disability, also have a right to reduced working hours.
Contacts: MOSD 17102378; government contact centre 80008001.
The catch: you must be registered and receiving the allowance first. If you are not yet registered with MOSD, start with disability registration, then update your ID.
Steps
- Register with MOSD and get approved for the disability allowance.
- Apply to iGA for a new ID card with medical documents and allowance proof.
- Collect the new card at an iGA ID centre.
