The Consumer Protection Law (Law No. 35 of 2012) sets basic rules for every shop and supplier.
Prices and receipts
- The price must be clearly shown, along with a description of the product and the length of any warranty.
- You have the right to a dated invoice that states the type of product, the price and the warranty.
- Any information given about a product must be correct and not misleading.
Sales and discounts
- During a sale, the warranty and guarantees still apply in full.
- The shop must show both the price before the discount and the price during it.
"No refund, no exchange" signs: putting this kind of wording on invoices, receipts or shop signs is banned by the law.
Penalties: breaking these rules can bring a fine of up to BD 10,000, and the Minister can close the shop for between 7 days and 3 months.
The catch: keep the invoice. Without a dated receipt showing the price and warranty it is much harder to prove what you were promised. Complaints go to the Consumer Protection Directorate at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
