Blood is donated at the Central Blood Bank at Salmaniya Medical Complex, on level 2 of the new block. It is the country's main blood bank and takes only unpaid volunteers.
Donation times: Saturday to Thursday 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM, plus Sunday, Monday and Wednesday 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Who can give: most healthy adults aged 18 or older who do not have a cold or flu. The weight limit on the page is more than 110 pounds (it writes this as 55 kg). Some medicines and conditions mean waiting before you can give, and the staff decide that on the day. For health questions call 17284454 or 17284455.
What happens: you register, answer a private medical history interview, then your pulse, blood pressure and haemoglobin are checked. The donation itself takes about 7 to 10 minutes, and the whole visit about 30 minutes. Eat and drink plenty before you go.
You can give whole blood every 90 days. Every donation is tested, and donors are told if a result is not suitable.
